Pakistan SC notice to PM Imran Khan for the use of public property for PTI’s legal forum and appearance at SCBA poll campaign
Islamabad/New Delhi, October 13, 2020: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has issued suo-motu notice on Monday the 12th October, 2020 to the Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan over his participation in a lawyers' convention organized by the party in power Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's legal wing - The Insaf Lawyers Forumin Jinnah Convention Centre, Islamabad which was held on October 9 for canvassing for its candidates at the upcoming Supreme Court Bar Association Elections. Significantly, while issuing him the notice, the Supreme Court asked the Prime Minister Imran Khan to explain as to why he used a state property for his party PTI's function where he addressed the Insaf Lawyers Forum (ILF) on Friday last week.
According to the news of local media 'Dawn News', during the hearing of a case against the Punjab government, Justice Qazi Faiz Issa said that, "PM Imran Khan is the Prime Minister of the entire country and not any particular group. Then why are they misusing government resources."
The Supreme Court of Pakistan Bench of Justice Qazi Faez Issa and Justice Amin-ud-Din Khan, while hearing a civil case against the Punjab government, Justice Isa, who was heading a Two-Judge Supreme Court Bench which had taken up a civil matter, apparently got disturbed when an application for adjournment of the hearing was furnished by advocate-on-record Mehmood A. Sheikh on behalf of Ahmed Awais who was recently elevated to the position of Advocate General for Punjab. A request was also made in the application for granting ample time so that petitioner Mohammad Tariq could engage another counsel in place of Mr Awais.
Justice Isa also asked the court office to place the order before Chief Justice of Pakistan Gulzar Ahmed for constitution of an appropriate bench to hear the matter.
The apex court has also issued a notice to help Attorney General Khalid Javed Khan in this regard. Along with this, the court has also sent notices to the Advocate General Punjab and Islamabad administration.
The Apex Court asked the Pakistan Bar Council, SCBA and Punjab Bar Council to assist it in the matter as it also appears to involve the integrity of the bar elections and of the office of the AG/chairman, Punjab Bar Council.
